Illustration: a wall with a hole and a water stain is cut back to the studs, backing strips are added, a new piece of board is screwed in, the seams are taped and mudded in widening coats, then the wall is textured, primed and painted so the patch disappears.

Step by step

How a drywall repair goes

  1. The damage

A doorknob hole, a crack along a seam, or board gone soft from a leak.

  2. Cut it square

We mark a square past the damage and cut back to the studs. Where there is no stud, backing strips go in so the patch has something solid to screw to.

  3. Hang the patch

New board cut to fit, screwed to the studs and backing, screw heads set just below the paper.

  4. Tape the seams

Paper tape on every seam, bedded in compound so the joint never cracks.

  5. Mud and feather

Three coats, each one wider than the last, sanded between coats until the edge disappears.

  6. Texture, prime, paint

Texture matched to the wall around it, primed, then painted so the patch does not show in afternoon light.

Water damage, holes, cracked seams, ceiling patches after a plumber has been in, new walls in a basement or garage. We hang, tape and finish it, and paint it too, so you are not left with a patch that shows. Small jobs start at $500, so it is worth bundling a few repairs into one visit. Photos help us price it quickly.

Service area: Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Hillsborough and Pittsboro.

Typical jobs

What we get called for

  • Water damage

Cut out the soft board, dry it out, hang and finish new drywall.

  • Holes and cracked seams

Doorknob holes, settling cracks, tape that has let go.

  • Ceiling patches

After a plumber or electrician has been in the ceiling.

  • New walls

Basement rooms, garage walls, closing off an opening.

Every patch gets taped, finished to match the texture around it, and painted if you want, so you are not left with a square that shows in the afternoon light.

I first booked with Clear River for a remodel of our downstairs bedroom, which was in pretty rough shape. I had put off calling anyone about it for awhile because I’m not exactly a handyman sort of guy, and I didn’t even know where to start or what to ask for. Thankfully, I struck gold on my first call to these guys. I spoke with Shawn, who turned out to be the owner, and he was very professional and personable. We talked through some basic options on the phone, and he said we could hash out the rest once he was able to examine the room. I was pleasantly surprised by that flexibility and by how quickly he was able to fit me in. I expected to wait months, but it wasn’t even a week! Once he got there and took a look around, it turned out that it actually needed less work than we’d originally thought. Now, keep in mind, I know next to nothing about this stuff. I thought the room was totally trashed. He could have charged me to replace the walls, window, and ceiling, and I’d have been none the wiser. But he didn’t, and the cost was much less since he only ended up having to remove the wall panelling, replace the trim, and repaint. And it still ended up the best-looking room in the entire house. His honesty saved me money and impressed the hell out of me, too. I ended up hiring him again later to redo most of the downstairs to match the bedroom’s quality, and then once more for the garage. The quality was top-notch every time. Seriously good work from this company, and I can’t recommend them enough.

I hired Shawn to install a fan in a bathroom that was built in the 80s without a fan. This included adding new electrical wiring, new ducting, and cutting a hole through the side of the house for the vent. Shawn was responsive throughout all the planning, including a visit to the home, providing a professional estimate, and email communication with me to coordinate on my requests around the specific fan and timer switch I wanted. The job started and finished exactly according to schedule; the final price was exactly as quoted (and on par with three other estimates I got); and all four people that worked in my home were professional, efficient, and cleaned up after themselves. If you’re reading this review then you are probably going through the nearly impossible process of finding a contractor that is honest, reliable, skilled, and sticks to budget - Shawn is all of those things!

FAQ

Common questions

Do you clean up daily?

Yes. The work area is cleaned up at the end of every day, and the rest of the house is protected while we work.

Will my home be dusty?

We hang plastic barriers and run dust control, so the mess stays in the room we are working in.

Are there any hidden costs?

No. You get one number before the job starts. If something changes, usually something behind a wall nobody could see, we tell you right away and get your approval before going further.

Are you insured?

Yes. Clear River Contracting is fully insured, which protects your home and everyone working in it.

What areas do you serve?

Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Durham, plus Hillsborough and Pittsboro. If you are nearby and unsure, send photos anyway and we will tell you.

Can I get an estimate without a site visit?

Yes. Send a few photos of the room and we reply with a price range. If it looks like a fit, we schedule a visit to measure and firm up the number.
