Illustration: cracked floor tiles are pulled, the substrate cleaned, new tiles set and grouted.

Step by step

How a tile repair goes

  1. Cracked or loose

A few tiles cracked or hollow underfoot. The rest of the floor is fine.

  2. Pull the bad tile

The cracked pieces come out and the old thinset is scraped back to a clean substrate.

  3. Set the new tile

Fresh thinset, new tile set level with its neighbours, spacers in.

  4. Grout and clean

Grout matched to the old, spacers out, haze cleaned off. Walk on it the next day.

Between remodels we take on smaller tile jobs: cracked or loose floor tile, regrouting a shower, kitchen backsplashes, laundry and entry floors. Small jobs start at $500, so if more than one thing needs doing, send it all at once. A few photos is enough to tell you whether we can fit it in and roughly what it will cost.

Service area: Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Durham, Hillsborough and Pittsboro.

Typical jobs

What we get called for

  • Floor tile repair

Cracked, loose or hollow-sounding tiles pulled and reset, grout matched.

  • Shower regrouting

Old grout raked out and replaced. Epoxy grout if you want it to stay clean.

  • Kitchen backsplashes

Subway, mosaic or large format, with the outlets cut in clean.

  • Laundry and entry floors

Small floors that need to handle water and boots.

Step by step

How a regrout goes

The most common tile call: grout that is stained, cracked or letting water through.

  1. Step 1: Stained or cracked grout

Dark lines, crumbling joints, or water getting behind the tile.

  2. Step 2: Rake out the old

The old grout comes out to clean tile edges. No shortcuts over the top.

  3. Step 3: Fresh grout, sealed

New grout matched to the tile, cleaned and sealed. Epoxy if you want it to stay clean.

I hired Shawn to install a fan in a bathroom that was built in the 80s without a fan. This included adding new electrical wiring, new ducting, and cutting a hole through the side of the house for the vent. Shawn was responsive throughout all the planning, including a visit to the home, providing a professional estimate, and email communication with me to coordinate on my requests around the specific fan and timer switch I wanted. The job started and finished exactly according to schedule; the final price was exactly as quoted (and on par with three other estimates I got); and all four people that worked in my home were professional, efficient, and cleaned up after themselves. If you’re reading this review then you are probably going through the nearly impossible process of finding a contractor that is honest, reliable, skilled, and sticks to budget - Shawn is all of those things!

I highly recommend Clear River Contracting. Originally I hired Shawn to replace an old fiberglass moulded shower with a new unit, which he did and it looks amazing! He went over and above with every detail.

I was in the process of getting my home of 33 years ready to go on the market and I was overwhelmed with repairs/upgrading that needed to be completed. Shawn took on everything that I threw in his direction without hesitation, which included a new bathroom, carpentry work on my deck/house exterior, drywall, plumbing, electrical, power washing house/driveway, painting - there is no way I could have met my deadline without his help.

I am so thankful he answered my plea for help on Nextdoor!

FAQ

Common questions

What types of tile can I choose for my new shower?

You choose from a selection we keep with suppliers we trust, from white subway to large-format porcelain and patterned floor tile. Keeping to that selection is what lets us hold the price and the schedule. If you have something specific in mind, ask and we will tell you whether it works.

Can I supply my own materials?

We supply the materials. It is how we stand behind the work with a warranty, and it keeps the schedule from stalling on a late delivery. If you already have a specific tile or fixture, ask; sometimes it works.

Are there any hidden costs?

No. You get one number before the job starts. If something changes, usually something behind a wall nobody could see, we tell you right away and get your approval before going further.

Are you insured?

Yes. Clear River Contracting is fully insured, which protects your home and everyone working in it.

What areas do you serve?

Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Durham, plus Hillsborough and Pittsboro. If you are nearby and unsure, send photos anyway and we will tell you.

Can I get an estimate without a site visit?

Yes. Send a few photos of the room and we reply with a price range. If it looks like a fit, we schedule a visit to measure and firm up the number.
